Take A Knee

Throughout its history, sport has been inextricably been tied to politics, whether it be the symbolic victory of Jesse Owens winning multiple gold medals at the Berlin Olympics, or Mohammed Ali famously refusing to be conscripted for the Vietnam war, decrying “No Viet Cong, Called Me the N word.”

Over the last few months we have seen, in particular in the very American sport of Gridiron, a significant number of athletes dropping to one knee to mark the disadvantage and discrimination directed towards them by their nation.

To talk to us about this phenomena and about the symbolic nature of sport we had Macquarie University’s lecturer Keith Rathbone.
