How Media Affects Our Health Perception

The media is undoubtedly an influential tool. From fashion to politics, the media plays a huge role in influencing our perceptions. But how does the media influence our perceptions of health? It may not seem obvious, but shows like the Biggest Loser and beautifully photoshopped images of celebs like Gwenyth Paltrow can both implicitly and explicitly influence the way we think about health. To discuss the influence of media on our perceptions of health and obesity we spoke to Senior Lecturer from the University of Technology Sydney, Catriona Bonfiglioli. In addition to being a professional journalist since 1985, Catriona specialises in analysing news media coverage of obesity, nutrition and physical activity and was Research Coordinator at the NSW Centre for Overweight and Obesity at the University of Sydney.
