The politics of denim – skinny jeans are just the latest under fire

Denim jeans have been a big part of our culture for a long time.

And it’s often because they stand for something more than just practical leg coverings.

A few years back, there were reports that skinny jeans were banned over their relationship with the “exotic and decadent lifestyle of capitalism” in North Korea.

But jeans have been political in many ways, standing at the forefront of social change for over a century.

Dr Harriette Richards studies the cultural aspects of fashion, and has been looking at the history of denim controversy.

She’s a Senior Lecturer at the School of Fashion and Textiles at RMIT University in Melbourne, and joined us on the Thursday Daily.
