The Walama Court – Reducing Indigenous Incarceration

The Walama Court would implement traditional customs and cultural knowledge into the legal system with supervision and support programs introduced instead of prison time. The process also involves communication between Aboriginal Elders and judges. The NSW Bar Association President Tim Game has already endorsed the program saying that it would decrease incarceration rates among indigenous Australians and save money.

Professor Felicity Gerry from Deakin University  joined us earlier to break down the specifics of the new court system.
