Tuesday Book Club: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

For this week’s Tuesday Book Club, Andrew Pople brought along an old classic that has recently been adapted into a TV series.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood explores the possibility of a world in a state of total war and totalitarian control. The novel follows the story of Offred, who is a handmaid; a select class of women chosen for their breeding potential. In presenting this stratified society where women are defined by roles, Atwood highlights male privilege as well as the risks that come with taking away an individual’s freedom in the name of safety.
