Tuesday Book Club: “Matryoshka” by Katherine Johnson

Andrew Pople introduces us to Katherine Johnson’s latest novel “Matryoshka”.  Matryoshka explores the sorrows of exile and estrangement, and the painful legacies of intergenerational trauma, set in the hauntingly beautiful landscape of Tasmania.

Sara Barsova has returned to her family home at the foot of Mt Wellington following the death of her Grandmother, Nina. Nina Barsova came to Australia as a post-war Russian refugee and raised Sara as her own following the teenage pregnancy of Sara’s mother Helena. A chance meeting with Abdhul, an Afghani refugee, has Sara reevaluating her ties to family and she seeks to forgive her mother and finally discover the identity of her father.
