Want to Read More Books? Start Here

Nearly half of Australians say they want to read more—but common barriers like distraction, low motivation, and decision fatigue often get in the way.

Dr Breanna Wright, Co-Director of the Health and Social Portfolio at BehaviourWorks Australia, Monash University, joined us to unpack new research into why so many Australians read less than they intend to, and how behavioural science can help. Her team identified key stages in the “reading journey” and shared 10 practical strategies to overcome common obstacles—from trying audiobooks and short formats to setting up a reading routine or buddy system.

The key takeaway? Reading should be enjoyable, not a chore. By understanding what’s stopping you and making small, targeted changes, anyone can build better reading habits—even in a distracted age.
