Was 536 the worst year to be alive?

18 months without sunlight and the start of a decade-long volcanic winter. This week we shed some light on the year 536. 

After a series of volcanic eruptions in the Northern Hemisphere, what followed was famine, war and a plague that killed around a third of the Byzantine empire.
