Film: Women Talking

Based on the novel Women Talking by Miriam Toews and directed by Sarah Polley, Women Talking is the story of a community Mennonite Women who discuss whether or not to leave their isolated community after discovering that the men of their community had regularly drugged and raped them. The film follows the debate that forms out of the situation between the colony’s women; some arguing to stay and fight in their corner for justice and others who want to leave the community forever.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay and starring Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, Clair Foy, Frances McDormand and Ben Wishaw, Women Talking is a difficult but illuminating drama that doesn’t shy away from discussing sexual violence, power and how to achieve justice.

Series: Gaslit

Adapted from first season of the podcast Slow Burn by Leon Neyfakh and directed by Robbie Pickering, this limited TV series is an exploration of the Watergate Scandal that broke Richard Nixon’s US Presidency in 1972. While not focusing on Nixon himself, Gaslit examines the fallout of the Watergate scandal through  the lives of the political staffers, spouses and others on the periphery of the Nixon administration.

Starring Julia Roberts, Sean Penn and Dan Stevens, Gaslit is an exploratory thriller about one of America’s biggest political scandals.

Series: War of the Worlds 

In this Television adaptation of the H.G. Welles classic, creator Howard Overman focuses on the lives affecting by the war of an alien species against the human population of Earth. Moving away from big budget sci-fi war action, the series instead asks questions about what it means to live in a world that has been depopulated by a superior military force from another world, and how to rebuild, accept and define humanity in the wake of our losses.

Album: The Land, The Water, The Sky, Black Belt Eagle Scout

The 3rd album by Swinomish/Iñupiaq singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Katherine Paul is a dreamy rock collection of indigenous experience. Released under her moniker Black Belt Eagle Scout, this album is the summation of a journey Paul undertook back to her homeland in 2020, returning to the Skagit River in an attempt to heal from a wounded world. Drawing on her indigenous life and nature and featuring some great guitar and drum work thats both soothing and entertaining, The Land The Water The Sky floats you up with healing melodies that pour forth from a solid bed of rock music.
