Wayne’s 4×2 – 19 June 2025: Bad Monkey, Caroline 2 and More!

Need something to watch over the weekend but not sure where to start? Want to listen to something but don’t quite know what?
Wayne Massingham is here to save you with his weekly recommendations in film, music, and television.
Film: The Materialists
Directed by Past Lives director Celine Song, The Materialists follows a failed actress turned matchmaker played by Dakota Johnson, and the love triangle between her, her ex-partner (played by Chris Evans) and a charming billionaire (played by Pedro Pascal). Much like Past Lives, the film explores intimacy, identity and modern relationships.
The Materialists is in cinemas now. Watch the trailer here.
Television Show: Day of the Jackal
Based on the Frederick Forsyth novel of the same name, this British spy thriller television series re imagines the book in a modern day setting. It centres on a ruthless British assassin known as the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) and the MI6 officer (Lashana Lynch) who becomes obsessed with tracking him down.
Day of the Jackal is available on Foxtel/Binge. You can watch it here.
Television Show: Bad Monkey
This black comedy crime show follows Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a former police detective turned restaurant inspector in South Florida. When a severed arm is found by a tourist while fishing, Yancy is pulled into a world of corruption and greed. And yes, there is a monkey.
Bad Monkey is available on Apple TV. You can watch it here.
Album: Caroline 2 – Caroline
The creatively named second album by the London based 8 piece group is a folk rock/emo/post rock experience. The album is incredibly experimental, with strings and horns used to add texture to the album. American singer Caroline Polachek is also included on the album.
Caroline 2 can be listened to on Bandcamp here.
