Why are air-conditioners energy inefficient?

Did you know air-conditioners consume crazy amounts of energy? Depending on the climate zone, heating and/or cooling can account from around 20% to 50% of energy used in Australian Homes. This can cause severe problems in the long run by overpowering the central or regional grid. At the same time, they are essential in our everyday lives in keeping us cool or warm depending on the weather. With the ever-growing population and problems with drought, there is an obvious increase in the use of energy consumption that can cause strains to the electrical systems but is there a solution or an alternative to air-conditioning?  We had Mr.John Dartnall who is a lecturer from the department of Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
