Where have the political church signs come from?

On Twitter, you may have seen some of the church signs of Father Rod Bower, whose messages such as “Some people are gay. Get Over it.” have gone viral.

Bower’s signs are a part of a general trend of churches spreading direct political messages, with St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne displaying a banner welcoming refugees.

But where has this trend of political church signs come from, and why are they effective?
