Why Measure Whales with Drones?

Whales are some of the biggest and most beloved wild creatures on this planet and are iconic in the battle for its conservation. They are also some of the most mysterious animals. Despite their large size, they are challenging to study – often spending only short amounts of time at the ocean’s surface. The Daily spoke with Grace Russell – PhD candidate at Southern Cross University – who is determined to shed more light on Humpback and Pygmy Blue Whales, using drones to build a more robust picture of body condition and migration patterns in Australian waters.
