Will Yang Face the Death Penalty?

Yang Hengjun has been changed in China for espionage, which carries the death penalty. Many speculate that Yang is only arrested because of pro-democracy views and having written articles criticising China’s Communist government. Yang is part of the Australian Media Union who have supported his release and urged the Australian Government to assist in the release of Yang. However, Scott Morrison has said he respects China’s sovereignty and wants Yang to be looked after in China. Due to Australia’s reliance on China’s trade and economy it is unlikely Australia will risk Chinese relations to assist Yang even though he is an Australian citizen. We were joined by a close friend of Yang, Associate Professor Dr Chongyi Feng from UTS.
