5G: Putting an extra G in your pocket

How often do you use the 4G on your phone? The revolutionary generation is still seen as quite a new and very fast ‘generation’ of mobile phone network. Although generations seem to be updated every 10 years, it was announced that there is a fifth generation in development and is planned to be released in 2020.

Despite the fact that 4G is retrospectively new, some of the major carriers in Australia such as Vodaphone and Telstra are preparing for the next generation of mobile phone network, 5G. With this new generation being set to release in 2020, is it too soon for the fifth generation to stand apart from the 4th generation and what would it’s differences be? We were now joined on the line with Phillip Branch, Associate Professor in Telecommunications Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology to talk more.
