Hospital vs homebirth: which one is more cost-effective?

Could encouraging more women to give birth at home save tax payers money?

Overseas studies costing the place of birth seem to think so, but no-one has crunched the numbers here in Australia.

Midwife Vanessa Scarf is the project coordinator for the Birthplace in Australia study at UTS. She is studying the comparative costs of giving birth in domestic or hospital settings in NSW as part of her PhD.

Vanessa spoke to Ninah Kopel.

Vanessa is also speaking at the place of birth seminar on Friday 29th April @ UTS.
