Think Breakfast: Extinction and the effects

This week Nic was joined by Think:Sustainability producer Miles Herbert to discuss whether we should use technology to reverse the extinction of native animals. Australia is the second worst country for native animal extinction behind Indonesia, thanks largely to habitat destruction.

Miles has looked at both sides of the debate: do we try and bring animals back from extinction or do we let it be and learn how to look after habitats and ecosystems? Academic opinion remains divided. Whilst using technology may feel like “cheating”, there’s evidence that reintroducing species to their wildlife habitats can help to restore environments as well.

Nic and Miles Herbert discuss the ramifications and possible solutions. They also ask the hard questions – is a species classified extinct if we bring back a couple and put them in a zoo?
