Is China a ‘Global Threat to Human Rights’?
Opening with a damning report on China, the Human Rights Watch released its 652-page annual report during a press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York last week. This years report opens with the executive director of the Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth, describing China as a “global threat to human rights”. Roth even goes on to say that China may “portend a dystopian future in which no-one is beyond the reach of Chinese censors, and an international human rights system so weakened that it no longer serves as a check on government repression”. To discuss the findings within the report we spoke to Associate Professor in China Studies from University of Technology Sydney and adjunct Professor of History from Nankai University in Tianji, Dr Feng Chongyi.
