Dictionary of Sydney: Bricks

They’re everywhere. They’re one of the most commonly used building materials in Sydney. Everywhere you turn, you’re most likely to see a building structure made from bricks.

But have you ever actually considered learning more about the history of bricks and brick-making? A once thriving industry in Sydney, there were 56 different brick companies operating out of Alexandria and Waterloo between 1858 and 2007, creating continuous employment for many Sydneysiders.

Nic was joined in studio by Dictionary of Sydney’s Dr Lisa Murray to learn some more about the history of the humble brick.
