Dictionary of Sydney: Buses
In light of recent changes to Sydney’s bus network, Dictionary of Sydney takes us on a journey through the history of buses in Sydney.
Sydney’s first private bus started out as early as the the 1860s—a replacement of the problematic and unpopular tramway. These horse drawn omnibuses dominated the transport options in Sydney until the 1890s when more reliable trams confined them to the inner city.
They were made obsolete with the invention of motor vehicles in the 1920s. Private buses however, remained a flourishing industry, with approximately 612 private buses carrying 90 million passengers annually.
Nicola Cama from the Dictionary of Sydney took Nic on a ride through the tales of Sydney’s fractious past with buses.
