100th Anniversary of the Kinchela Boys Home
It’s been 100 years since the opening of the Kinchela Boys Home – an institution where Aboriginal children who had been removed from their families were subject to horrific treatment.
Operating between 1924 and 1970, the NSW Government-run ‘training home’ mistreated and re-programmed Aboriginal children as part of the Stolen Generation. Children taken from their homes were assigned numbers and forced to deny their heritage, assimilating into White Australian society
Earlier this month, survivors of Kinchela gathered at the site to share their experiences of the institution, showing the power of Aboriginal truth-telling. Among the attendees was Brydie Zorz, a Wiradjuri woman and Research Assistant for the Justice and Equity Centre’s truth-telling project, Towards Truth. Brydie joined 2SER breakfast this morning to tell us more.
