The London-native band, Black Country, New Road have just released their fourth studio album. The follow-up to their acclaimed 2022 record, “Ants From Up There”, Forever Howlong is a musically complex record that slips through folk, prog, and baroque pop while drawing inspiration from artists such as Joanna Newsom and Kate Bush. Various tracks have genre transitions: moving from a slower, ponderous tune to punchier fast-paced rhythms and theatrical devations. The beauty if this album lays in its instrumentation, including classic folk guitar riffs and string soundscapes.
Naarm-based soult outfit Velvet Bloom‘s self-titled debut album has just dropped. Incorporating a mix of neo-soul, folk, funk and indie-rock to get their deliciously warm sound. With raw lyrics from the group’s frontwoman, Maddy Herbert, it’s clear to see how much time and effort they’ve put into the record. Velvet Bloom have a gig in Sydney at LOW 302 on Saturday 6th June, if you want to get your fix of invitingly tender grooves.
Big Crown Records has released Lady Wray’s new single Be A Witness. Produced by Leon Michaels, it’s a mid-tempo boogie banger, with a sparkly space-dust synth to top it off. If you haven’t had a chance to check out any of Lady Wray’s extensive discography, this would be a superb place to start.
