This week we have a lovely bundle of music to report on, all wrapped up in a multi faceted bow for you, our loyal listeners! Here’s whats new in the music world….
Starting with our feature album for the week Glitching Colour by Human Noise!
Glitching colour marks the Sydney rock quartets sophomore album and was written through the backdrop of bushfires and the pandemic. The album is a lyrically tense collection of polyrhythmic bedroom-recorded rock that shifts between angst, frustration and euphoric optimism. The album was produced by Ben Edwards (Alduous Harding / Marlon Williams), and is fronted by Eddie Boyd on vocals and guitars, plus Mon Ellis (Guitars/Synths), Clayton Allen (Drums/Percussion) and Josh Spolc (Bass/Moog).
Emma Donovan returns to an earthier country sound with her second solo album Til my song is done.
Donovan is a first nations Australian singer/songwriter who was born in Liverpool (who has also recorded multiple albums as frontwoman for The Putbacks as well as others). She began performing as a child in her family’s band, The Donovans!
Till my song is done is a mix of bluegrass, folk and blues run through with dusty soul elements. The whole album is liquid gold, much like track 8 liquid gold which really gets you in a groovin mood buuuut if you want inspo to get some change happening in your life, I personally vibe with track 1, change is coming to get you in an “I can do this mood”!
Til My Song Is Done by Emma Donovan
Taking you over seas and oceans now to Washington DC…Ekko Astral and their newest release Pink Balloons
This marks the debut album for the femme-punk five piece. Pink Balloons brings together DIY bubblegum, no-wave and art-punk that veers between the thrashy, loud and strange in a record that always remains yet bewitching. Self-described as “Mascara Moshpit Music”, the band consists of front woman Jael Holzman, Liam Hughes (guitar), Miri Tyler (drums), Guinevere Tully (bass), and Sam Elmore (guitar).
Pink vinyls, casettes, mascara moshpit music… what more could you want to punk up your music collection – insert femme quote about anti patriarchy vibes here – <3
Bringing it back down under to Naarm, disco-soul group Sugar Fed Leopards release Love. Be in it to get you on the dance floor!
The third album from the Naarm disco/funk collective brings sunny throwback disco and 60s crooner soul with lots of heart and tonnes of horns. ‘Love. Be in it’ is a reference to the Life Be In It, government fitness campaign from the 80s and inspires people to get lovefit through real connection and being moved by music.
Sugar Fed Leopards could be described as Saturday Night Fever meets Kath and Kim on acid so find out if they fit the bill and chuck em a listen!
Single and ready to mingle? Here are some new singles to swipe right to
Nao Yoshioka – Unapologetically Me – Funky soul single from the Japanese RnB vocalist who was born in Osaka. This was just released on Tokyo’s “Sweet Soul Records” label
Don’t thank me, spank me! – Be my forever – Fun loved up guitar rock single from the Naarm “best-friend” duo about who are about to release an album in May 2024
Kobie Dee – Warriors & Storytellers – New track from the Gomeroi rapper Kobie Dee, who is proudly based in South Sydney’s Maroubra Bidjigal Land.
