Heading into the homestretch for 2023 about now, however the amazing new music keeps on rolling in.
The feature album this week on 2SER comes courtesy of much-loved local four piece The Brights with their breakthrough debut studio record “Oyster Rock”. Channeling summer, it’s a fulfilling dose of charmingly idiosyncratic guitar pop and a must-listen if you’re a fan of bands such as Ocean Party, Soft Covers or The Go-Betweens. Read more about it here (or tune in all this week to 107.3)
Also spinning loud is the excellent new mixtape from Wylie Park based dj and rapper Bayang tha Bushranger. It’s a superb dive through left-crossover rap and electronica with a raw and freeform style and warrants multiple listens.
Enigmatic Naarm/Aetoroa-based electronic duo OV Pain have just released their second full-length album “Reliquay of Dusk” via the always excellent IT records label. Ov Pain are Renee Barrance (Élan Vital) and TimPlayer (Opposite Sex) and it’s a highly atmospheric trip through dark synthwave that rides a fine line between cinematic production and gothic ambience, arranged using Octotrack sampler, Minilogue and ms20 as well as Renee’s compelling and haunting vocal work.
Another favourite right across 2SER is Sonny Ism, who is set to release his “Dad Zone” LP this week, the follow up to the excellent Clock Without Hands, and the fourth in total from the prolific producer. Highly personal thematically, it represents a deeper musical direction than on his previous more club based releases. It’s a beautiful record filled with dream-like electronica taped together with elements of pop and disco.
Lots more to get your ears around as well, including some excellent new-wave/indie rock from Scatter Light (who are currently on their national tour), a ripping new punk EP from Sweat and much much more.
