Last Fridaymarked the release of Derya Yıldırım and Grup Simsek’s fifth studio album Yarin Yoksa. The Turkish-German fusion group have taken a big step forward with this record, showcasing a groovy, psychedelic sound fused with the ‘outernational’ (French, German and South African) heritage of its band members. For those who don’t speak Turkish, the language barrier poses no limitations as Derya Yildirim’s enchanting vocals tell a passionate story of their own.
A little closer to home we have the debut solo album from Eilis Frawley, the Adelaide-born, Berlin-based percussionist and songwriter. Fall Forward is an experimental record, incorporating a melting pot of nuanced political expression, classical, punk, jazz, Krautrock and indie elements. It’s hard to ignore the political meaning behind many of the tracks – Frawley seeks to platform FLINTA voices and to acknowledge social stigmas, however that doesn’t take away from the groovy baselines and spacious synthesisers.
If you’ve been keeping up with the Sydney indie music circuit, you’d know of Nick Griffith. His most recent release has pulled him further down the indie-folk/alt-country track, featuring twangy guitars and out-of-tune pianos. Trash and Treasure is a heartfelt kick of sentimentality – there’s a sense of nostalgia from having predominantly been recorded on vintage equipment – its imperfections make it so delightful to listen to.
