Last week saw the release of one of the most fun dance records of the year. Wrong Way Up, the Naarm-based duo of Andrew Phillips and Emmanuella Degery have gone into fullbown 80s Lagos disco mode for their latest record, Totally Right. Featuring era-specific synthesisers and drum machines, interweaving sax and lyrical themes of empowerment, this is a pulsing and wild affair along the lines of William Onyeabor and Ljadu Sisters. Fittingly, this was released via Soundway, a label with a long history of lovingly restoring and reiussuing prized musical gems of that era of African dance music (among many other eras and places), and the LP seems to have sold out in most places already.

Karen Lee Andrews‘ debut solo album, Survival is a must-have for fans of soul-inflected country, rock and blues. Themed on hardship and empowerment, it’s a highly accomplished record from the Wollongong-born artist, who already has a fine run of collaborative work and various live/ep releases. Also locally, keep an ear out for the excellent new one from Maia ToakleyBefore I let go“, it’s a beautifully put together EP of dream-pop with songwriting about the need to let go of fear, and one that Toakley will be launching live at The Factory Floor on April 11.

Are you after a crazy collision of jazz, rock and low bitrate video game effects, recorded as a jagged and bumpy ride through kaleidoscopic soundscapes inspired by science fiction, fantasy and Japanese culture? Well, Godwounds have you covered via their new album “Brighten Up Sunshine” and then some. The local five-piece have been cooking up their strange fusion of traditional instruments and customised video game chipboard synthesisers for a while now, and their second full album is a wild hit to both the senses and sensibilities.
