While some parts of Australia are still engulfed by flames, several towns such as Lake Conjola and Lithgow, are beginning to be cleared and rebuilt. However, scientists have warned that over-clearing debris, such as ash and fallen trees can impede upon the natural recovery of the ecosystem. While some trees may appear burnt and blackened, numerous tree species have adapted to survive bushfire conditions. The question remains: what effective land management strategies to allow for the safety of fire-affected victims and for the natural regeneration of the environment? 

Dr Robert Kooyman joined us to discuss how clearing away too many debris can impede upon the restoration of the ecosystem. He is an Honorary Research Fellow from the Department of Biological Sciences at Macquarie University.
