UN’s New Amendment for Climate Refugees

The U.N. yesterday announced that governments cannot return people to their own country if the climate situation endangers their lives. This marks a major milestone in addressing the issue of climate change and its effect on populations and the world. This is the first drastic legal action to take place surrounding the issue of climate change. This comes after a man in the South Pacific island of the Republic of Kiribati pleaded for help from neighbouring New Zealand due to the health risk of his homeland for himself and his family.  It is now time for countries to put the amended law into practise and sanctions to be put into place if the law is disobeyed.  Dr. Maria O’Sullivan from Monash University joined us earlier  to discuss the reception of this new amendment from world leaders as well as what action they would take and how the world as a whole could benefit from the amendment to the law.
