Deepfakes and Resurrecting Dead Actors

The use of artificial intelligence has become more prominent in today’s society. Recently a film adaption of the Gareth Crocker’s novel ‘Finding Jack’ has found use of this artificially intelligent technology in the casting of actor James Dean, who tragically passed away in 1955. In this live action adaptation, James Dean will be reconstructed entirely by CGI through the use of AI to collect data on his actions and appearance from his previous films. However, with the use of this technology many people have concerns over the exploitation of these deceased actors and the fears for up and coming actors looking to get their break in the industry. 2SER spoke with Dr Mitch Goodwin, an independent media artist and an academic, specialising in digital aesthetics, media ecologies and cultures of automation who discussed these growing concerns.
