After the experimental electro-pop of 2018’s ‘Safe in the Hands of Love’, the Miami singer and producer Sean Bowie takes a left-turn by releasing a bona fide glam rap-rock record. Full of guiltless hedonism and chunky guitar solos – all the while retaining his signature eclectic, sample-heavy sound – ‘Heaven to a Tortured Mind’ reeks of light-night studio apartments and early morning cigarettes as Bowie sings like David over the boom-bap bombast of a Bad Boy Records beat. Standing at the intersection between the New York Dolls and Harlem World, ‘Tortured Mind’ is an exhilarating record from a musician at the top of his game.

Circuit Des Yeux frontwoman Haley Fohr dons her alter ego Jackie Lynn for an electro-country record full of longing and loneliness. A surly truck driver who drifts down dayglo highways, ‘Jacqueline’ welcomes us into an uncanny Southern America where casinos are ruled by queens and late-night diners feel like dreams. Fohr croons with a voice less like Loretta Lynn and more towards the post-human talk of the Human League, as her backing band, the Bitchin’ Bajas, complement their synths and drum machines with rich Don Gibson-esque strings. A reinvention from a vital indie rock musician, ‘Jacqueline’ sounds like little else out there.
