Digital Only Newspapers Mark The End For Regional Journalism

The media industry has struggled to deal with the economic challenges that the coronavirus pandemic has presented and mass media publishing company Newscorp is no exception. News Corp Australia has recently announced that it will be completely shutting down 36 local newspapers as well as transitioning another 76 local newspapers to a purely online format. Hundreds of jobs have been lost and there is significant concern for the long term sustainability for purely online publications as well as their ability to tell local stories. 

Dr. Chrisanthi Giotis, a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney’s School of Communication joined The Daily to discuss what News Corp Australia’s recent announcement says about the state of local and regional journalism in Australia
