The trans-Tasman bid beat out that of Colombia by 22 votes to 13 at the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich late last week.

After previous bidders Japan and Brazil each pulled out of the race in recent days, Australia and New Zealand were up against Colombia alone. What does this win mean for women’s sport, and how did geopolitics come into play during the bid?
