Startup Regional Newspaper Defies the Odds
It seems that every day there are articles breaking the news of more jobs losses in journalism and heralding the end of newspapers, but one South Australian regional town is home to a start-up community paper – The Naracoorte Community News.
It was founded in April by Michael Waite after the region’s former paper, The Naracoorte Herald, was suspended by Australian Community Media and now eight issues have been released in both hardcopy and digital format.
The Daily was joined now by one of its journalists, Eliza Berlage, to chat about how the paper was born, the challenges facing regional journalism, but also the ways in which it continues to thrive.
