Why University Fee Hikes Will Disproportionately Affect Women

In an effort to push tertiary students into careers in teaching, nursing, agriculture, STEM disciplines and IT, the Federal Government has halved their total fees whilst doubling the total course for degrees in the arts, social sciences, communications and humanities.

In a move that is being referred to as a form of social engineering to push the next generation of tertiary students into fields of study in fields of expected employment growth, the proposal will have a profound impact on women who have taken up two thirds of enrolled students in the humanities and social sciences disciplines over the last ten years.
