New Environment Law Framework Could Give States Too Much Power

Following a recent review into the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act of 1999, the Morrison government has introduced a new bill to amend the environmental law framework. The review, which has taken place over the past decade, has led to the government proposing giving state and territory governments more power in an attempt to fast track projects. 

However, following criticisms this may give the states too much power, the government has announced this week that the new law will be accompanied by standards to ensure federal oversight.  To unpack this framework, we spoke with Megan Evans, a lecturer at the University of NSW.
