Why The Budget Must Make Aged Care a Priority

Next Tuesday the Morrison Government will be handing down the federal budget for the 2020/21 financial year, with experts predicting significant results for the health sector. This year has exposed the cracks in many healthcare industries, in particular the failures of the Australian aged care system. From reports highlighting poor regulation and standards, to abuse and neglect of staff and residents, many industry leaders have noted that the aged care system is in need of major reforms and government funding.

Dr Stephen Duckett, Health Program Director at the Grattan Institute, along with his colleagues, hope to see this Tuesday’s budget finally prioritise aged care. Together they have outlined the key areas that need to be addressed in what they call an ‘aged care trifecta’, focusing on an ‘expansion in home care, greater transparency, and a rescue package’.

To discuss this plan, 2SER spoke with Dr Stephen Duckett.
