The Tissue Bank and the Skin Shortage

Organ Donations rates a constant issue in Australia, with people generally unsure of what it entails, people not making their issues known and families distressed at the idea that causes low donation rates. One area that is often affected is skin donations, along with bone donations. Skin donations are often used on bushfire victims, such as those during the Black Saturday Fires in victoria. Unfortunately, skin donation rates are so low that one patient may deplete the The Tissue Bank’s entire stock, forcing them to import skin from over seas.

Producer Lucy Ross spoke to David Ranson, the Deputy Director of The Tissue Bank in Victoria to discuss this issue more, and talk about how important skin donation is.
