Pride in Protest
For more than 40 years, the Oxford Street parade has been the hallmark of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. However, COVID-19 has upended traditional plans, forcing Mardi Gras to relocate to the Sydney Cricket Ground to ensure the event is COVID-safe. Pride in Protest is a Sydney-based organisation that aims to harness the protest roots of Mardi Gras, collectively campaigning against homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and racism. They have planned an Oxford Street march to fight for LGBTQ+ rights on the 6th of March, with almost four thousand people already estimated to attend.
Alex James spoke with Evan Vanzijil from Pride and Protest to hear more about their plans.
