Global Impact of Earth’s Shifting Magnetic Field
The Earth’s magnetic field plays a very important role in our lives. Our televisions, radios, microwaves and countless other household items rely on it to function. But what is even more significant is the very strong impact the Earth’s magnetic field has on the climate and environment.
With this in mind, imagine the widespread consequences if this magnetic field temporarily broke down. Well, that’s what happened nearly 42,000 years ago – according to a recent study co-led by UNSW Sydney and the South Australian Museum.
We were joined by co-lead author of the study, Professor Chris Turney, to tell us more about this important point in the Earth’s history.
