What would a CPACS downgrade mean for intellectual freedom and and censorship?
Sydney University’s Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (CPACS) has a long and vibrant history of promoting debate on difficult but important issues such as accountability for war crimes in Sri Lanka, West Papua, Palestine and human rights.
And out of CPACS the Sydney Peace Foundation was born, which gives out Australia’s only annual international Award for Peace, presented in the past to the likes of Noam Chomsky, Desmond Tutu and Julian Burnside.
But recently the University of Sydney has been talking about downgrading CPACS from a stand alone centre to a department, a move that has raised alarm amongst Labor and Greens MPs. Mitch spoke to CPACS to director Jake Lynch about why and what this means for the future of intellectual freedom and censorship.
