China Asserts Itself Over Taiwan Independence

Most of us, if we were to talk about Taiwan at all, would probably refer to it as a country, an independent nation, but its actual political situation is actually far more contentious. The distinction reached the mainstream this week with American actor John Cena making a grovelling apology to China for referring to Taiwan as a country, a fairly small slip when speaking to Taiwanese media at that, when China considers Taiwan a part of itself. So, what is the actual distinction, why is China so keen to assert itself on this issue now, and how does it affect the political situation in China itself?

We were joined by Dr Roger Huang, Lecturer in the Department of Security Studies and Criminology at Macquarie University, to find out more.
