Ensuring Liberty For Women In Afghanistan

Since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, there’s a lot of uncertainty around how the new regime will treat women. While previously in power, the Taliban subjected women to brutal oppression including things like removal from employment, forced marriage and sexual slavery. Recently however, the Taliban have stated that their new reign will be a more moderate one. At the same time we’ve already seen laws come into effect that harken back to the old order. So what does the future hold? And what can the international community, and individuals do to help ensure long term liberation for women in Afghanistan? Thursday Daily producer Stef Posthuma spoke with expert in Muslim women’s rights from McGill University in Montreal – Professor Vrinda Narain.
