Unprecedented increase in perception of racism
Each year the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute releases a new report on Australia’s social cohesion and this year’s mapping showed some surprising results.
Most notably, the report found there was an unprecedented 20% increase in how Australians perceived racism as a ‘problem’ in the country, over just a one-year period.
In July 2020, only 39 per cent of people believed that racism was a ‘fairly big problem’ or ‘very big problem’. However, in July of this year, that figure rose to 60 per cent.
