Dick Smith Closing Down
It was announced yesterday afternoon that electronics retail chain Dick Smith was closing its doors after years of troubled back and forth, putting nearly 3000 employees out of a job within the next couple of months. The result may not seem shocking to many people who have been hearing about the troubles the stores have been having in recent times, or attended one of those disappointing everything must go sales a month or so ago, but Dick Smith has still been a staple of the Aussie retail market since the 1970s and a bitter pill for anyone employed by the retailer. So was it the business’ own failings that brought it down or a sign of the time for brick and mortar stores? Professor of Institutional Economics Sinclair Davidson from RMIT University, spoke to The Daily about the end of a Australian retail institution.
