You are now a number – the threat of big tech and online data

It is slowly becoming common knowledge that companies, especially big tech, mine the data of internet users for their own self-serving purposes, such as creating target advertisements for people that cater to their interests and search history. However, while this unsettling fact has become more well known throughout the public, it seems that there is no escaping this ‘surveillance capitalism’ as coined by Shoushanna Zuboff. To discuss these concerns, we were joined by Dr Suranga Seneviratne, a lecturer on computer science at the University of Sydney whose current research revolves around privacy and security in mobile systems, AI applications in security and behavioral biometrics.
