Selective teaching is a new trend that is being called on to create better teaching standards as well as set benchmarks in line with other global and national education systems to make our young people more competitive and applicable in the real world. Current proposals include lifting minimum ATARs and using a system similar to that of Scandinavia to make teaching positions more prestigious and more based on the economic laws of demand and supply. But does it make any sense and even if it works, how should it be approached without hurting potential aspirations of those who want to become teachers? The Daily spoke to Professor Barry McGaul of the University of Melbourne.
