Echuca – Moama braces for once in 200 year flood
Echuca in Victoria and its twin town of Moama in NSW across the Murray are hoping their levee’s will hold against the worst flooding the area has seen since 1870.
As Shepparton and the Goulburn valley reels from the current volume of water now, it is projected late Wednesday the Goulburn river water will meet the Murray and Campaspe rivers at Echuca and the community is desperately trying to get people to higher ground whilst building a sandbag wall 3 km long to protect the town.
Large Army Helicopters have been deployed to Victoria, as well as 100 defence force personnel providing support with evacuations and sandbagging. At least in contrast to the Lismore flash floods, these rivers are a bit easier to predict, and State and Federal Governments have been able to react.
