Covid-19 Fines Invalidated in a Test Case
Covid-19 Fines Invalidated in a Test Case – On November 29, Tuesday, Revenue NSW withdrew more than half of over 60,000 covid penalties issued during the pandemic. It follows a landmark NSW Supreme Court decision that penalties imposed on certain individuals are now invalid. Interviewee: Redfern Legal Centre Principal Solicitor Samantha Lee. She said her 3 test case clients had no choice after trying all options to have the fines cancelled. NSW Supreme Court conceded that the fines issued failed to meet the legal requirements under the Fines Act of NSW. Most of those affected by the fines are vulnerable individuals; First Nations communities; children and those on low wages or no wages. Reporter/Producer: Annamarie Reyes
