AHRC’s Sexual Assault Report Controversy
The Australian Human Rights Commission has been accused of betraying the 39,000 students who participated in the survey on Sexual Assault on Australian Universities Campuses. Criticism stemmed from the announcements that data on the sexual assault rates of individual Universities, would not be released. Claims the Commission did not seek full ethics approval for the survey and would not make any enforceable recommendations, also surfaced, evoking widespread backlash. In response, all 39 Universities revoked their previous announcements, saying they will release the data compiled on the prevalence of sexual assault in their institutions. To allay many concerns, The Commission has assured us it will release the reports findings and recommendations for areas of reform, by mid year.
To cut through the sensationalism and misinformation a lot of media has had to say about this and work out what is going on, we spoke with the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Kate Jenkins.
