Television: The Staircase
Based on the Netflix documentary of the same name, this drama explores the case of Michael Peterson (played by Colin Firth), a writer who is accused of murdering his wife Kathleen Peterson (played by Toni Collette) after she is found dead at the bottom their staircase in their house. Nominated for numerous awards including a Golden Globe and a Prime-time Emmy, The Staircase is a slow-burn mystery that uncoils its secrets over the 8 episode order. Well worth watching.

Film: Empire of Light
From Director Sam Mendes (No Time to Die, 1917) comes a story of cinema, the magic of the moving image and the struggles of the community that works and lives around the Empire Cinema of the south coast of England in the 1980’s. Olivia Colman stars as Hilary Small, duty manager of the Empire Cinema who is struggling with bipolar disorder and interpersonal issues with her coworkers and boss. When Stephen Murray joins the Empire staff, played by rising star Michael Ward, their attraction to each other is fraught by racist abuse and controversy.

Aftertaste is the latest dramady from the ABC. Easton West is a volatile but talented celebrity chef who returns to his country family home in the Adelaide Hills following a spectacular fall from grace after multiple controversies in his European restaurants. He partners with his prodigy pastry chef niece to revitalise his image and rebuild his career. Aftertaste stars an all star Australian cast including Rachel Griffiths ans Erik Thompson.

Album: Taken By Force Civic
The second studio album from Melbourne-based rock band Civic, Taken By Force is a no-nonsense album that harkens back to a bygone era of homegrown grassroots Aussie pub rock. The album is only 30 minutes total and doesn’t muck around, it hits you hard and fast, and then gets out of your way.
